Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- With a large group of alumni in attendance, the Men's Soccer took down Bridgewater College on Saturday night, 2-0.
A short ceremony before honoring George Grzenda, a long-time faculty member and supporter of all things Lynchburg Athletics, helped create a great atmosphere for the game, along with fans watching from the bleachers, track and tailgate area.
Lynchburg almost sent the stadium into celebration just four minutes into the game as sophomore Zach Thomas worked a defender and sent in a cross and a rocket header from senior Ben Grossfuss beat the keeper but glanced off the crossbar.
Another near miss for the Hornets came in the 20th minute as Bridgewater committed a foul about 25 yards out. A group of Hornet players gathered around the ball but after the whistle was blown to proceed senior Thomas Salamone was the one who took the free kick. He curled a beautiful ball up and over the wall and would have beaten the keeper but his shot also bounced off the crossbar.
The Hornets would get their goal just a minute later though as Grossfuss sent in a ball from the right side that Thomas powered past the goalkeeper into the back of the net putting his team up one.
Sophomore Austin Kues recorded the second Lynchburg goal, his first of the season, and gave the Hornets a two goal cushion heading into halftime.
Each side had their fair share of opportunities in the second half but only one shot, out of nine, found the frame of goal for either team and with a scoreless 45 minutes, sophomore Dylan McLaurin (2 saves) and the Hornets recorded the victory and moved to 10-1-2 on the year.
Junior Fredy Flores recorded four shots, sophomore Dan Friedberg registered two of his own and a group of seven other Hornets each had one shot to their names.
The Hornets will take their undefeated conference record across town to Randolph College when they play a strong WildCat squad at 7:00 p.m. this Tuesday, Oct. 18th.
