Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- The Women's Soccer team knocked off conference leading Shenandoah on Saturday afternoon, 2-0.
In a chippy match that was filled with aggresive play, the two teams racked up 20 fouls but no cards were issued the entire 90 minutes.
The Hornets earned an early cross and looked to convert. Senior Marina Clark whipped in a service that fellow senior Samantha Bagherpour snapped into the back of the net with her head, her fourth on the season, to give Lynchburg the early lead in the 6th minute.
The sturdy backline for Lynchburg handed in a spectacular peformance, allowing one shot and shutting down ODAC goals leader, Emily Yergin. The first half would end with Lynchburg up 1-0.
Hostile play was still prevalent in the second half as hard fouls became more and more abundant. The Hornets continued to test the Shenandoah keeper but could not find the back of the net, that was until the 88th minute.
Freshman Marissa Inglisa rand down the right sideline, past the Shenandoah bench, and fired in a sevice. The goalkeeper got her hands on it but sophomore Caitlin Mertens put it home to seal the Hornet victory. Mertens finished with five shots, as did junior Rachel Cooke while Bagherpour, Clark, senior Kelley Smith and sophomore Kennedy Jakubek combined for 13 shots.
The Hornets travel up Route 29 to neighboring Sweet Briar for a conference match this Wednesday with kickoff set for 4 p.m.
