Box Score Winchester, Va. -- Men's Soccer proved to be the better Hornet team Friday evening as the Lynchburg easily defeated Shenandoah, 5-0.
With the win, the Hornets now jump back to the top of the ODAC Standings with a record of 5-0-1 but they are followed closely by Washington & Lee and Randolph-Macon who are at 5-1.
The brute force at the top of the formation, sophomore Zach Thomas, opened the scoring in just the 3rd minute. Fellow sophomore Dan Friedberg sent in a service with which Thomas got a foot onto and chipped over the Shenandoah keeper to give Lynchburg the early lead.
Thomas was not done, just six minutes later he put the ball into the box and recorded an assist after junior Fredy Flores sniped a shot into the back of the net, giving Lynchburg a 2-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the match.
Junior Nate Berning was able to get the ball across the goal line as well, recording his second goal of the season in the 30th minute. After Berning's goal, the reserves started to rotate into the game. Freshman defender William Sherman recorded his first career goal in the match after he chested down a bouncing ball just outside the 6-yard box, took one touch and slotted a low shot into the net. With Sherman's goal, the Hornets headed into halftime with a comfortable 4-0 lead.
Lynchburg began to rotate reserves to keep everyone fresh and give valuable on-field experience to the talented youngsters. Freshman Nick Morgan rounded out the Hornet scoring following a great ball from freshman Evan Cobey. Even though Morgan has not started and only played in 9 games, the young forward is third on the squad with four goals.
With the exception of a few injured Hornets, the entire roster saw action Friday evening including all of the backup goalkeepers in senior Cory Budka, junior Sam Cannon, and sophomore Ian Campbell. Sophomore Dylan McLaurin started in goal and was never really tested but earned the win to move to 11-1-3 overall and 5-0-1 in conference.
Lynchburg outshot Shenandoah 16-5 and the defense for Lynchburg held the Shenandoah forwards and midfielders in their half for the first 15 minutes of the match.
The men return to action when they head to Guilford for a makeup of a rained out game earlier in the season. The match is set to kickoff at 7:00 p.m.
