Box Score Lynchburg struck early and often in Northern Kentucky with senior midfielder Samantha Bagherpour finding the back of the net off of junior midfielder, Rachel Cooke's assist 13 minutes into the match. Just a mere minute and 24 seconds later the Hornets were up 2-0 after junior back liner Emily Maxwell scored with the assist coming from senior midfielder Kelley Smith. Senior goalkeeper Tess Frelick made two first half saves while Lynchburg outshot the Flying Dutchmen 6-3 and held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks heading into halftime with a two goal lead.
Hope responded very quickly in the second half when they cut the Lynchburg lead to one goal as Natalie Curry scored just one minute and 25 seconds into the half. Much like the Hornets in the first half, Hope scored its second goal to even the game at 2-2 just one minute and 54 seconds later after Erin Brophy found the equalizer. With 27 minutes left in regulation the game winning goal came off the foot of freshman forward Alyssa Rudy who split her defender to rip a shot that got past the Flying Dutchmen goalkeeper. The Lynchburg backline lead by senior Natalie Deacon and Maxwell held off the Hope attack to secure the NCAA Tournament victory. The Hornets outshot the Flying Dutchmen 14-6 and the teams each chipped in with 10 fouls each.
Lynchburg is slated to play Saturday at 1 pm vs. host Thomas More after the Saints defeated Penn St. Behrend 3-1 earlier today. You can view the game on LynchburgSports.com.
