Box Score Ashland, Va. -- The Lynchburg Volleyball team suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the ODAC Semifinals as Washington & Lee denied the Hornets a trip to the Championship game, 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-15). The Generals dominated the match, not allowing the Hornets to get above 19 points in any of the sets.
The first set was a good battle as both sides never gained large leads and the contest remained close. Despite senior Jen Garrett recording nearly half of her kills in the first set, the Generals gained momentum mid-set and rode it for the remainder of the set, taking a 1-0 lead.
Washington and Lee sat up 13-11 but freshman Ragan Rudisill strung together a solid service combo which included kills by Garrett and freshman Sydney Frink to put the Hornets up 14-13. Despite the solid play from the Hornets, the Generals found the empty spots on the court and went on a 13-4 run to close out the second set.
Errors and a multitude of blocks for the Generals hurt the Hornets in the final set as they struggled to find a rhythm against a Generals defense who was on point, registering 13 total blocks.
Garret led the way, in what ended up being her final game as a Hornet, with 14 kills and 11 digs. The senior outside hitter ends her career third all-time in Hornets history for kills (1137), kills per set (2.89) and total attacks (3057).
Junior Lynn Walsh notched 16 assists while Rudisill and freshman Lauren Stanford combined for 17 digs for the Hornets Friday night.
The future is bright for Lynchburg Volleyball, after going 8-18 in 2015, the women finished the 2016 campaign at 19-10 and 8-3 in conference. The team had an extremely tough schedule including multiple national and regional ranked teams.
