LC Baseball Wins Second Game to Split DH with W&L

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College baseball team split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader Saturday with visiting Washington & Lee University, dropping the first game 2-1 but taking the nightcap 8-6.

W&L scored a run in the top of the first inning of the first game, taking advantage of an LC error. Robey Smalley doubled in the third to bring home another run for the Generals. Lynchburg plated a run in the fifth to make it 2-1. Ryan Katona singled with one out and went to third on a single from Thomas Powell. He scored on a groundout from Joe Tomasulo.

Lynchburg threatened in the sixth and eighth innings by getting two runners on base, but couldn't push the tying run across.

Tom Concklin went the distance on the hill for W&L, scattering eight hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Kyle Ruedisili and Luke Myer each had two hits. Matt Ward and Kotona each had two hits for Lynchburg, and David Goulding threw seven innings, allowing just five hits and one unearned run.

Each team scored two runs in the first inning of the second game, and W&L took a 3-2 lead in the fourth before Lynchburg exploded for six runs in the seventh. Katona led off with a single, Powell walked and Tomasulo singled to load the bases. Ward hit an RBI groundout and the Generals recorded the second out of the inning with the game tied at three. Jonathan Munn brought two runners home with a single and two errors from W&L helped LC score two more runs. Dillion Serley singled to drive in the sixth run of the frame.

Washington & Lee's Ryan Weston hit a three-run homer in the ninth to make it a two-run game, but the Generals left the bases loaded with the chance to tie or go ahead.

Tomasulo and Katona had two hits for Lynchburg, with Scott Simmons and Ruedisili each had two hits for W&L (12-7/2-2 ODAC). Michael Day earned the win for LC.

The Hornets (5-11/2-2 ODAC) host Stevenson University Sunday at 1 p.m. in a non-conference game.
