Hornet Baseball Drops Pair to #5 Randolph-Macon
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College baseball team hosted fifth-ranked Randolph-Macon College Sunday in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader, but dropped both ends of the twinbill, 7-2 and 14-8.
The Yellow Jackets scored four runs in the third inning of the opener, aided by two Hornet errors. Nick Maiolo delivered a two-run single in the frame.
After R-MC scored another run in the top of the fourth, LC struck for two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Senior Drew Taylor tripled and scored on a double from Matt Ward, and later Ward scored on a ground out. The Yellow Jackets used three straight singles to load the bases in the eighth and sent two runs home on a sacrifice fly and an error.
Joe Tomasulo and Ward each had three hits for Lynchburg. Jonathan Munn had two basehits, and LC had 10 base knocks in the first game. Maiolo, Stuart Brown, Herminio Azor and Jeffrey Butler each had two hits for the visitors.
James Walsh scattered nine hits over eight innings and allowed just one earned run with seven strikeouts to raise his record to 7-0. David Goulding gave up three earned runs and tossed eight innings for LC with no walks and three strikeouts.
The Yellow Jackets took an 11-3 lead in the nightcap in the top of the eighth. Lynchburg rallied for five runs in the bottom of the frame to make it a three-run game. R-MC committed three errors in the inning, and the big blow was a two-run triple from Thomas Powell. Randolph-Macon countered with three more in the top of the ninth to put the game away.
The teams combined for 29 hits and eight errors in the second game. Ryan Katona went 3-4 for LC and Tomasulo, Sharp and Matthew Stevens each had two hits.
Travis Lodge was a perfect 5-5 for Randolph-Macon (23-5/9-5 ODAC).
Lynchburg (7-23/3-11) hosts Hampden-Sydney College Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in another conference game.
