Hornet Baseball Splits ODAC Doubleheader at EMU
HARRISONBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College baseball team split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader Saturday at Eastern Mennonite University, winning the first game 11-8 but dropping game two 10-3.
The Hornets ripped 17 hits in the first game, three each from Matt Ward, Nathan Sharp and Drew Taylor. Joe Tomasulo, Jonathan Munn, Will Harris and Ryan Katona each had two base hits in the opener, and Sharp and Taylor had three RBI apiece.
Sharp doubled in the first inning of the opener to help give LC a 2-0 lead. After an EMU run in the second on a David Meehan triple, Munn, Harris, Katona and Taylor all had run-scoring hits in the third to give LC a 6-1 lead. The Royals tied the game with five runs in the fifth, but Taylor ripped a two-run triple in the sixth to take the lead right back.
A Sharp RBI single in the seventh made it a 9-6 game, and two more runs in the eighth pushed the lead to 11-7. EMU scored once in the bottom of the ninth.
Graham Boggio earned the win with 1 1/3 innings of middle relief, while Zack Engelmann tossed four innings to pick up the save. He allowed four hits and one earned run while striking out four.
Kyle Armstrong, David Meehan and Joe Hall each had two hits for EMU.
Lynchburg opened the nightcap with runs in the first and second frame, but EMU broke out with six runs in the bottom of the third and never looked back, totaling 20 hits.
Munn, Katona and Taylor had two hits each for LC, while Munn also walked twice and drove in two runs. Zach Roberts was 4-6 for the Royals (15-18/7-10 ODAC) with two runs scored and three RBI. Armstrong had three hits, including a double and a triple.
The Hornets (9-24/5-12 ODAC) are home for the rest of the regular season. LC hosts Guilford College Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in another ODAC game, and non-conference foe Methodist University Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. Lynchburg's five seniors will be honored Saturday in a season-ending doubleheader against Shenandoah University, with first pitch of game one scheduled for noon.
