Around the Horn

The Hornets split a doubleheader with the Stevenson Mustangs Sunday afternoon. Game 1 fell Lynchburg's way after back and forth responses from the Mustangs. Game 2 the Mustangs mustered up 11 runs, snagging the win.

Game 1 Breakdown

- Off the block, Lynchburg sent senior Will Hylton, junior Luke Rodgers, and sophomore Thomas Powell home

- Lynchburg increased their lead to four in the second inning with a sacrifice fly out to centerfield by Hylton, giving freshman Austin Keesee the chance to go for home

- The Mustangs responded in the third inning and tied up the game at four, followed with one more run to garner take the lead

- After three non-responsive innings for the Hornets, Wild swung for a double placing him in scoring position. Senior Ryan Katona reached first but advanced on an error, pushing Wild off second to go home and tie the game at five

- Katona scored on a fly ball out to left field coming from freshman Shawn Allen, putting the hornets back on top

-  The seventh inning yielded four runs for both the Hornets and the Mustangs, with two errors and two singles, paired with three walks, gave the Hornets a 10-9 victory.\

Game 2 Breakdown

- Lynchburg was first to light up the board again, coming out with two runs

- The Hornets momentum kept flowing in the second inning with four RBIs by Powell, Rodgers, sophomore Nathan Sharp, and junior Matt Ward to give the Hornets a five run lead, 6-1

- Mustangs closed the gap with three runs in the third inning and stole the lead in the 5th when the Hornets allowed five runs

- Lynchburg got the bats swinging again in the sixth  inning with back-to-back triples from Hylton and Powell, and a Mustang pass ball to bring Lynchburg within two runs

- Even with a three up and three down inning for the Mustangs, the Hornets failed to score in the final inning as Stevenson secured the win 11-9

On Deck

The Hornets will travel to Hampden-Sydney on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. start as they play their fifth game in a four days.
