HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1

  • Penn State Harrisburg struck for three runs in the top of the first, but Lynchburg answered back in the bottom of the frame when Powell reached on an error and was doubled home by sophomore left fielder Shawn Allen (Columbus, N.J.).

  • Lynchburg took the lead in a five-run second inning keyed by a leadoff double from senior designated hitter Matthew Stevens (Annandale, Va.). Stevens scored on Powell's RBI double, and Allen, Harris, and senior first baseman Matt Ward (Newton, N.C.) added RBI hits in the inning.

  • The Hornets added an insurance run in the fourth when senior catcher Matthew Cotton (Charlotte, N.C.) drove in a run and two more in the fifth thanks to a two-run double from senior center fielder Brad Hylton (Danville, Va.), making it nine unanswered runs.

  • Junior right-hander Graham Boggio (Midlothian, Va.) settled down after the first, holding the Nittany Lions scoreless through four more frames to earn the win. Sophomore reliever Nick Norman (Goochland, Va.) earned the three-inning save, striking out three in the process.

Game 2

  • Lynchburg drew first blood in the nightcap with a leadoff double from Powell in the first inning. He came home on a two-out single from Hylton.

  • After Penn State Harrisburg knotted the score in the top of the fifth, Powell's opposite-field solo homer gave LC a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning.

  • Sophomore right-hander Hunter Campbell (Lynchburg, Va.) pitched well through five innings, but the Nittany Lions got to the righty in the sixth with a two-run homer by Bret Williams.

  • Senior reliever Kyle Jacksic (Hardwick, N.J.) pitched 1 ⅔ innings of scoreless middle relief, and freshman righty Michael Reiskind (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) pitched out of a jam in the ninth, but the Hornet offense couldn't rally as LC settled for the split.
