Lexington, Va. -- The Lynchburg College men's and women's track & field programs boasted nine top-five finishes and saw one athlete break into the program's top 10 list Saturday at the Washington and Lee Carnival, the team's second outdoor meet of the season.
Junior Morgan Watson (Concord, Va.) and freshman Kaitlyn Johnson (Spotsylvania, Va.) both excelled in the women's 5,000-meter run. Watson's 18:22.8 run placed her third, though short of a PR, and Johnson finished fourth in 18:27.68, a run that puts her eighth in the program annals.
Junior Rachel Murray (Chesapeake, Va.) placed second in the javelin with a 34.39-meter toss, while freshman Amaya Matthews (Norfolk, Va.) was third in the long jump (4.83m), and senior Lacey Elliott (Newport News, Va.) was fourth in the 100-meter dash (13.16 seconds).
On the men's side, the 4x400m relay of freshman Azavier Kirtley (Roanoke, Va.), junior Conor Cahill (Staunton, Va.), sophomore Kevin Moran (Milford, N.J.), and junior Isiah Williams (Fredericksburg, Va.) placed second (3:22.63).
The individuals preceded that with a quarter of fourth-place finishes: freshman Julian Douglas (Lynchburg, Va.) in the 100m (11.44), Moran in the 400m hurdles (57.31), senior Casey Kalinowski in the pole vault (3.8m), and junior Dalton Hoppe (Buchanan, Va.) in the javelin (49.65m).
Lynchburg will return to action next weekend for their home meet, the Dr. Jack M. Toms Invitational, beginning Friday on the track that bears the longtime coach's name.
