Track & Field Set Up For Season Opener At Liberty

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg indoor track & field squads are squared away to make their season debut at the Liberty Kickoff meet hosted by Liberty University at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex on Thursday, Dec. 4 and Friday, Dec. 5.

The first competition of the season will include 35 colleges and universities from across multiple NCAA divisions, including many high-level division I programs. The men's and women's track & field teams look put their months of offseason training to good use against elite-level competition to kick off their campaign.

Thursday will feature select field events, including the men's hepathlon and women's pentathlon. Track races commence on Friday, beginning with the men's 5,000m at 9:45 a.m. Lynchburg's meet lineup will almost exclusively feature athletes from the sprints and field events side, while a handful of distance runners compete following the conclusion of the cross country season.

Lynchburg's men's team will look to claim its fifth straight conference title after winning in 2025, while the women's crew hopes to return to championship status after taking three ODAC championships in the last four years. Two seasons ago, the Hornets' DMR team consisting of Frank Csorba, Jacob Hodnett, Sam Llaneza, and Chasen Hunt claimed the individual national championship title during the indoor season.

This past spring, both Hunt and Tor Hotung-Davidsen achieved champion status in the outdoor season. Hunt, the DIII record holder for the 5,000m, became the national champion in the 5k to earn his second NCAA championship, while Hotung-Davidsen beat the field to become the champion of the 1,500m in 2025. Hunt returns to Lynchburg for his senior season this year and looks to add to his trophy case.

Many Hornets on both the men's and women's teams look to make their mark in the season debut, with many returners and newcomers across distance, sprints, and field events that could be impact performers. Following the Liberty Kickoff, Lynchburg will travel to Shenandoah on short rest for the Shenandoah Holiday Kickoff on Sunday, Dec. 7.
