Tufts bests baseball in Friday matinee

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- The Lynchburg College baseball team couldn't recover from a big third inning, falling in Friday non-conference play to visiting Tufts, 13-2.

Junior first baseman Chris Blake (Middlesex, Va.) and sophomore left fielder Shawn Allen (Columbus, N.J.) drove in the Lynchburg runs, while Allen was one of four Hornets to enjoy a multi-hit day at the plate. Sophomore third baseman Colin Corey (Springfield, Va.) went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

THE RUNDOWN

Final: Tufts 13, Lynchburg 2

Records: Tufts 5-2, Lynchburg 10-7

Venue: James C. Fox Field, Lynchburg College, Lynchburg, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Lynchburg leapt out to an early 1-0 lead when Blake's single to left field plated senior center fielder Brad Hylton (Danville, Va.).

  • The Jumbos scored the next 11 runs of the ballgame, scoring four in the second inning and nine in the third to break the game open.

  • As the Hornet relief pitchers stopped the bleeding with four straight scoreless frames in the middle innings, Lynchburg got a run back in the seventh on Allen's RBI single, which brought Corey around.

  • Tufts tacked on single runs in the eighth and ninth to bring the score to its final standing.

LOOKING AHEAD

Lynchburg won't have to wait long to atone for the loss, turning around for a conference doubleheader with Washington and Lee on Saturday, March 24 starting at 10 a.m.
