Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Lynchburg, Va. -- The Lynchburg College baseball team battled to a Saturday doubleheader split with Washington and Lee in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action, winning 5-4 in 10 innings in the opener before dropping the nightcap, 5-2.

Senior designated hitter Will Harris (Halifax, Va.) delivered a 4-for-8 day at the plate, the biggest blow a 10th-inning line drive down the left field line that brought home junior shortstop Thomas Powell (Stanardsville, Va.) for the walk-off win. Powell also had three hits in the opener.

Sophomore right fielder Austin Keesee (Chesterfield, Va.) collected three hits and an RBI on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1

  • The Generals drew first blood in the opener with unearned runs in the fourth and fifth innings off Hornets starter Matt Kane (Fernandina Beach, Fla.). Kane went five innings and allowed two unearned runs, striking out three.

  • Washington and Lee made it a 4-0 lead in the sixth with another two runs, one scoring on a Hornets fielding error.

  • Lynchburg quickly cut the lead in half in the bottom half of the frame with an RBI single by Powell and another run coming home on a double-play ball. The Hornets tied the game two innings later when Harris drove in one with a single to center field and another coming home on a Generals throwing error.

  • Riding the strong pitching of junior righty Graham Boggio (Midlothian, Va.), who tossed five innings in relief and allowed just four hits, the Hornets went into extra innings with the score knotted, 4-4.

  • Powell ripped a one-out double down the left field line in the bottom of the tenth, and Harris followed with a nearly identical hit that brought him home, setting off the LC celebration.

Game 2

  • Washington and Lee struck first again in the late one, taking a 4-0 lead, three of them due to a Zach Loewenberg homer, chasing Hornets starter Jason Wood (Gloucester, Va.) from the game. The Generals took a 5-0 lead in the fourth.

  • Generals starter Peyton McCann went six strong innings, allowing just two hits. Lynchburg was able to get to the W&L bullpen in the seventh, when Keesee delivered a two-out, RBI single that plated sophomore left fielder Shawn Allen (Columbus, N.J.). Allen was the lone Hornet with a multi-hit game in Game 2.

  • LC got a solid five innings of relief work from senior right-hander David Goulding (Lynchburg, Va.), who allowed just one run and struck out eight.

LOOKING AHEAD

Lynchburg will return to action Wednesday, March 28 on Fox Field, welcoming North Carolina Wesleyan to town for a non-conference twirl.
