Ferrum bests baseball in non-conference action

Box Score

Ferrum, Va. -- Lynchburg College's baseball team dropped a slugfest Wednesday evening, falling 15-9 to host Ferrum in non-conference play.

The game was the last out-of-league matchup between the two schools for the foreseeable future, as Ferrum is poised to join the Old Dominion Athletic Conference for the 2018-19 year.

Freshman shortstop Parker Shaffer (Richmond, Va.) enjoyed a career day at the plate for the Hornets, going 3-for-6 with a double and three RBI. Senior center fielder Brad Hylton (Danville, Va.) and senior catcher Matthew Cotton (Charlotte, N.C.) each drove in a pair of runs for LC.

The nine-run output was the most by the Lynchburg offense since the Hornets' plated 11 runs in a March 31 win over Emory & Henry.

THE RUNDOWN

Final: Ferrum 15, Lynchburg 9

Records: Ferrum 16-23, Lynchburg 14-18

Venue: Panther Field, Ferrum College, Ferrum, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Lynchburg took an early lead in the top of the first when Hylton smacked a two-run double that senior first baseman Matt Ward (Newton, N.C.) followed with an RBI single. After Ferrum struck back for a run in the bottom half, Shaffer struck an RBI double down the left-field line for a 4-1 LC lead in the second.

  • Ferrum counterpunched with 11 unanswered runs over the next three innings, including seven in the bottom of the fifth to assume a 12-4 lead.

  • LC got three runs back in the sixth, two on Shaffer's bases-loaded single, to cut the lead to 12-7, but FC tacked on three more runs in the seventh to put the game back out of reach.

  • Cotton drove in the Hornets' final two runs with an eighth-inning single.

  • Freshman right-hander Jason Wood (Gloucester, Va.) took the loss for Lynchburg, allowing five runs over three innings. Drew Calohan earned the win for the Panthers.

LOOKING AHEAD

Lynchburg will continue its respite from ODAC play over the weekend, traveling to Demorest, Ga., for a three-game set with Piedmont College. Game 1 will take place Friday, April 20 at 7 p.m.
