Greensboro rallies late to top baseball

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- The Lynchburg College baseball team couldn't hold onto a late lead Tuesday afternoon, falling to visiting Greensboro, 8-4, in non-conference action on Fox Field.

Hornets sophomore Hunter Campbell (Lynchburg, Va.) turned in his best outing of the season, going 6 ⅔ innings and allowing just four hits and one unearned run. He struck out two Pride hitters and didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning, but Campbell did not factor into the decision..

Freshman third baseman Parker Shaffer (Richmond, Va.) went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI for Lynchburg, and senior first baseman Matt Ward (Newton, N.C.) had two hits and drove in a run.

THE RUNDOWN

Final: Greensboro 8, Lynchburg 4

Records: Greensboro 12-15, Lynchburg 12-12

Venue: James C. Fox Field, Lynchburg College, Lynchburg, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Greensboro jumped out to an early lead, taking advantage of a leadoff walk and a Hornets fielding miscue for a first-inning run.

  • Lynchburg knotted the score an inning later when Shaffer's RBI single brought junior shortstop Thomas Powell (Stanardsville, Va.) around to score. The tally remained 1-1 through five innings as both starting pitchers, Campbell and the Pride's Matthew Yates, cruised.

  • The Hornets got to Yates in the sixth, though, when sophomore second baseman Austin Keesee (Chesterfield, Va.) led off the inning with a single, stole second, and scored on Ward's double down the left-field line. Greensboro reliever Eli Moravick entered after a two-out hit-by-pitch and promptly escaped the jam with a pickoff.

  • Lynchburg added another run on Shaffer's second RBI single of the game in the seventh as the Hornets took a 3-1 lead.

  • With Campbell out of the game, Greensboro jumped on Lynchburg relief pitching to the tune of three eighth-inning runs to retake the lead. But the Hornets rebounded to tie the game, 4-4, in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single by senior center fielder Brad Hylton (Danville, Va.).

  • Greensboro brought the bats out again in the ninth, scoring four times on three Hornet relievers to put the ballgame away.

LOOKING AHEAD

Lynchburg will hit the road on Tuesday, April 4 looking to even their Old Dominion Athletic Conference record at 6-6 against No. 4-ranked and league-leader Roanoke College. First pitch at Kiwanis Field in Salem, Va., is set for 7 p.m.
