Men's Soccer

Men's soccer falls to No. 11 Washington and Lee in ODAC final

Box Score

Hampden Sydney, Va. — Washington and Lee's Harris Salom scored a goal in the 81st minute, breaking a scoreless draw and sending the Generals to a 1-0 win over University of Lynchburg Saturday evening in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship match at Hampden-Sydney College.

Salom's goal, a close-range shot out of a scrum that was assisted by Charley Colby, broke a scoreless tie that Lynchburg keeper Kyle Gallagher worked hard to protect. Gallagher made five saves on the evening against the 11th-ranked Generals.

Lynchburg (9-5-6) had its opportunities in the first half, starting with a flurry of shots in the first six minutes. Ben Mackey, Michael Lyons, and Nick Foley all put balls on frame for the Hornets in the half, but W&L keeper Michael Nyc kept Lynchburg off the board with three of his seven saves. The Hornets had a 10-4 advantage in the shots column at the half.

W&L (16-2-3) flipped the tables in the second half, taking 13 shots to Lynchburg's four, but the Generals were unable to break through until the 81st.

Mackey and Foley each put shots on frame in the remaining nine minutes, but Nyc was solid between the pipes, and W&L secured the conference crown.

Jack Ashby, Luke Mega, and Lyons earned spots on the all-tournament team.

With the loss, Lynchburg's men's soccer program moved to 6-3 all-time in ODAC championship matches. The Hornets have played for a conference title in three of the past four seasons.

Lynchburg wraps up the season with a 9-5-6 mark and will now await the announcement of postseason awards, beginning next week with the All-ODAC teams.
