Track & field opens indoor season at Roanoke

Salem, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's men's and women's indoor track & field teams started the 2019-20 season off on the right foot this weekend with a strong showing at Roanoke College's Bast-Cregger Invitational.

The Hornets tallied nine event victories and added eight marks to the program's all-time top 10 lists.

Alex Shadkhoo paced the Hornets with a pair of sprint-event victories. The sophomore claimed first place in the 200-meter dash with a new personal best (22.47), improving on his own sixth-best time in program history. He also won the 60-meter dash in 7.06. The Hornets swept the podium in that event, as Zashon Brown-Flowers and Julian Douglas finished second and third, respectively.

Douglas added a victory in the long jump with a new PR (22'11.75") to leap into sixth on the program's all-time leaderboard.

Jordan Short added a victory in the 400-meter dash (50.91).

Lynchburg's distance crew also showed well, as Reid Sharkey, Max Sparks, and Tristan Lucy-Speidel went one-two-three in the 3,000-meter run.

Sharkey moved up to fourth on the all-time leaderboard, finishing in 8:35.55, while Sparks jumped to sixth (8:43.45).

The Hornets' 4x400-meter relay of Conor Cahill, Jeremiah Allen, William Fowler, and Shawn Gmurek finished the meet with an event victory (3:35.14) to ice the meet for the men.

On the women's side, the Hornets tallied three first place finishes as senior Sammi Woods claimed the top spot in shot put with a new personal best (40'10.5") and staked her claim at number four on the all-time top-10.

Junior Elle Benefield continued Lynchburg's field event success on the day as she took home a new PR in the weight throw (44'2.5") and moved into seventh all-time.

Sophomore Lauren Anderson finished second in the pole vault as she vaulted 10'11.75" to put her fifth on the all-time list.

Senior Keaira Reese claimed first in the triple-jump (35'2.5"), launching her into eighth on the all-time board.

Lynchburg's indoor track & field teams will be back in action in 2020, as the Hornets will head to Virginia Military Institute's Keydet Invitational January 17-18.
