Baseball opens 2019 with split at Maryville

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Maryville, Tenn. -- University of Lynchburg's baseball team earned a season-opening split Saturday in a doubleheader, besting host Maryville (Tenn.) 2-0 in the opener before dropping a 9-1 decision in the nightcap.

Junior right-hander Hunter Campbell (Lynchburg, Va.) and freshman right-hander Brandon Pond (Chesterfield, Va.) combined on the shutout in the season's first game, while freshman first baseman Garrett Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.) drove in both runs with a seventh-inning home run.

It was Lynchburg's first shutout since March 5, 2016, when the Hornets took a 1-0 win over Bridgewater on the front end of a doubleheader.

THE RUNDOWN

Game 1 Final: Lynchburg 2, Maryville 0

Game 2 Final: Maryville 9, Lynchburg 1

Records: Lynchburg 1-1, Maryville 4-2

Venue: Scotland Yard, Maryville College, Maryville, Tenn.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1

  • Lynchburg threatened early, loading the bases in the top of the first, but the Hornets stranded all three baserunners. Meanwhile, Campbell pitched out of trouble in the second and fourth innings to keep the Scots off the board.
  • The Hornets finally drew blood with two outs in the seventh, when Jackson homered to center field to bring himself and sophomore left fielder Parker Shaffer (Richmond, Va.) around, accounting for the game's only runs.
  • Pond allowed just two baserunners the rest of the way to nail down his first collegiate win.

Game 2

  • Jackson, the Game 2 starter for Lynchburg, pitched out of trouble in the bottom of the first but had no such luck in the second. After a hit-by-pitch, a walk, and an error, MC drew first blood on a wild pitch and followed that with a two-run single from Jack Shuttleworth that made it 3-0. The Scots made it 4-0 after a sacrifice fly. Jackson yielded four runs, three earned, over 1-plus innings.
  • Lynchburg got a run back with two out in the fifth when Jackson, who moved to designated hitter, rapped a two-out single that scored freshman second baseman Jackson Harding (Keysville, Va.).
  • The Scots added runs in the fifth and eighth innings to put the ballgame out of reach.

LOOKING AHEAD

Sunday's final game of the series was cancelled due to wet weather in the forecast for East Tennessee, so the Hornets will not be back in action until Wednesday, Feb. 20, when they trek south to Danville, Va., to take on Averett in a non-conference contest.
