Men's tennis starts Spring Break with tough win

Hilton Head Island, S.C. -- University of Lynchburg's men's tennis team opened the Spring Tennis Fest on the right foot with a hard-fought 6-3 win over Gordon Sunday at Hilton Head's Chaplin Park.

The Hornets took a 2-1 lead after doubles play and took two singles matches in third-set tiebreakers to seal the win.

"This team has really great chemistry and fights for every match," director of men's and women's tennis Chris Johnson said. "They are all very motivated and committed to each other!"

Senior Nick Savino (Bristol, Conn.) and sophomore Daniel Christian (Jamestown, N.C.) took an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles, and senior Colton Mullins (Appomattox, Va.) and sophomore Vincent Oliver (Springfield, Va.) did the same at No. 3 to snag an early lead for Lynchburg.

Mullins and Oliver won tiebreaks in their singles matches at Nos. 2 and 5, respectively, to help the Hornets seal the team win.

Christian at No. 3 and senior Brad Carson (Severna Park, Md.) at No. 6 also won matches in singles play.

Lynchburg's men will be back in action Monday, March 11 against Thomas More at 4 p.m. at the Shipyard Racquet Club on Hilton Head Island.
