Baseball comes from behind to top Jumbos

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's baseball team saw an eighth-inning lead disappear only to bounce back in the bottom half on its way to a 5-4 non-conference win over Tufts at home Friday afternoon.

After the Jumbos leapt ahead thanks to a two-run Lynchburg error -- the Hornets' fifth of the ballgame -- in the top of the eighth, freshman catcher Kaden Warren (Berryville, Va.) and freshman left fielder Brendan McDonald (Virginia Beach, Va.) delivered RBI singles in the bottom of the inning to put the Hornets back on top.

Sophomore right-hander Santiago Meneses (Guatemala City, GUATEMALA) got out of a two-on, two-out jam to record the final out and his first-career save.

Senior right-hander Graham Boggio (Midlothian, Va.) pitched well in a no-decision, going six innings and scattering five hits and two walks around two strikeouts. One of the two Tufts runs scored against him was earned.

THE RUNDOWN

Final: Lynchburg 5, Tufts 4

Records: Lynchburg 8-11, Tufts 7-2

Venue: James C. Fox Field, University of Lynchburg, Lynchburg, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Tufts took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Lynchburg's first error of the day.

  • The Hornets struck for a pair of runs in the fourth as graduate student right fielder Kinston Carson (Tappahannock, Va.) came home on a wild pitch and sophomore left fielder Parker Shaffer (Richmond, Va.) scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore first baseman Avery Combs (Lynchburg, Va.).

  • The Jumbos got a sacrifice fly in the sixth to tie the game at 2-2, but Lynchburg retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth on freshman first baseman Garrett Jackson's (Virginia Beach, Va.) sac fly.

  • Tufts retook the lead in the eighth, starting a rally with a leadoff single, a Hornets error, and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases. Freshman right-hander Carrson Atkins (Charlottesville, Va.) got a fielder's choice and should have escaped the inning on a ground ball, but the ball squeaked through the Lynchburg infield on another fielding miscue to bring the tying and go-ahead runs in. Atkins forced a double-play ball to the next batter to quell the threat.

  • Lynchburg wasted no time coming back as Carson ripped a leadoff triple in the bottom of the eighth, but a short-lived rainstorm forced a 30-minute rain delay shortly after. When the rain passed, Warren delivered the game-tying single up the middle, and Jackson doubled to left field to give Lynchburg runners on second and third with one out. The next hitter, McDonald, delivered the go-ahead RBI knock through the left side.

  • Tufts rallied with two outs as Atkins yielded a single and a hit-by-pitch, but Meneses entered in relief to induce the game-sealing popup. It cinched the sophomore's first-career save as well as Atkins' first collegiate victory on the mound.

LOOKING AHEAD
