Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's tennis team took Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Bridgewater down to the wire Thursday but eventually dropped a 5-4 decision in the league match.
Bridgewater jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play, the Lynchburg point coming at the No. 3 flight from senior Colton Mullins (Appomattox, Va.) and freshman Christopher Broadwell (Chapel Hill, N.C.), who won 8-2.
Lynchburg (4-6, 1-3 ODAC) fell behind 4-2 with two quick losses in early singles play but were bolstered by a win from sophomore Vincent Oliver (Springfield, Va.) at No. 6, 6-0, 6-2.
No. 3 man Daniel Christian (Jamestown, N.C.) earned a 7-6, 6-2 win to bring the Hornets closer, and Broadwell squared the match, 4-4, with a 7-6, 6-3 triumph at No. 5.
The match came down to No. 2, where Mullins and the Eagles' Matthew Gordon had split the first two sets. Gordon nailed down the win for Bridgewater, taking the deciding set, 6-4.
Thursday's was the Hornets' sixth-straight loss.
Lynchburg's men will be back in ODAC action Friday, March 29 with a trip to Roanoke College for a 3 p.m. match.
