Baseball raps out 15 hits in non-conference win

Box Score

Cary, N.C. -- University of Lynchburg's baseball team nailed down a road win Tuesday with its best offensive day of the season in a 9-5 victory at William Peace. The Hornets' scoring output was their best of the 2019 campaign, as were their 15 hits.

Graduate student right fielder Kinston Carson (Tappahannock, Va.) went 4-for-5 on the day and drove in a pair of runs, and freshman third baseman PJ Alvanos (Annapolis, Md.) also had two hits and drove in two runs.

Sophomore second baseman Parker Shaffer (Richmond, Va.) enjoyed his time in the leadoff spot for the Hornets, going 2-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored. Freshman catcher Kaden Warren (Berryville, Va.) also had a three-hit day for Lynchburg.

Freshman right-hander Garrett Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.) earned the win on the mound, allowing just one earned run on 3 ⅔ innings pitched.

THE RUNDOWN

Final: Lynchburg 9, William Peace 5

Records: Lynchburg 3-5, William Peace 3-7

Venue: USA Baseball Complex, Cary, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Lynchburg took an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single by freshman center fielder Carrson Atkins (Charlottesville, Va.) in the second, but the Pacers struck back for two runs in the bottom of the frame.

  • The Hornets retook the lead in the third on a two-run groundout by sophomore first baseman Avery Combs (Lynchburg, Va.), compounded by a WPU error, and added three more in the fourth on Alvanos' RBI triple, Shaffer's run-scoring single, and Carson's RBI double to take a 6-2 lead.

  • Peace narrowed the gap with two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth, but Lynchburg's offense came through again in the late going. Alvanos delivered a run-scoring single in the seventh and Carson did the same in the eighth. Lynchburg tacked on its final run after a ninth-inning Peace error.

LOOKING AHEAD

The two teams will finish their 2019 home-and-home series with a 2 p.m. matinee on Lynchburg's Fox Field on Wednesday, March 6.
