Baseball blows out William Peace

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's baseball team polished off a midweek sweep of William Peace, 9-0, Wednesday on a frigid afternoon at home on James C. Fox Field.

Eight Lynchburg pitchers combined on the staff's second shutout of the 2019 season, and the middle of the Hornets' order did the damage as their Nos. 3, 4, and 5 hitters combined to go 7-for-13 with six RBI in the ballgame.

Freshman catcher Holden Fiedler (Henrico, Va.) led the charge with a 3-for-4 day that included a double and two RBI, while sophomore first baseman Avery Combs (Lynchburg, Va.) had two hits and drove in three.

The Hornets have won three ballgames in a row.

THE RUNDOWN

Final: Lynchburg 9, William Peace 0

Records: Lynchburg 4-5, William Peace 3-8

Venue: James C. Fox Field, University of Lynchburg, Lynchburg, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Lynchburg got on the board early with a pair of first-inning runs. Combs led off the scoring with a sacrifice fly to center that brought sophomore left fielder Parker Shaffer (Richmond, Va.) in, and Fielder followed with a two-out single to plate graduate student right fielder Kinston Carson (Tappahannock, Va.).

  • The Pacers had a chance to counterpunch in the following inning, loading the bases with nobody out, but senior right-hander Ryan Irby (Midlothian, Va.) got out of the jam with a strikeout and a ground-ball double play. Irby pitched two shutout innings to kick off the bullpen day, earning his first win of the year.

  • Fiedler brought another run in with an RBI double in the third, and Lynchburg added another insurance run in the sixth thanks to an RBI triple off the bat of senior third baseman Griffin Wild (Severna Park, Md.).

  • Lynchburg broke the game open with a five-run eighth inning, highlighted by Combs' two-run double down the left-field line.

LOOKING AHEAD

Lynchburg is scheduled to begin Old Dominion Athletic Conference play on the road Saturday, March 9 with a trip to Lexington, Va., and rival Washington and Lee. The doubleheader begins at noon.
