HOW IT HAPPENED
-
Lynchburg got on the board early with a pair of first-inning runs. Combs led off the scoring with a sacrifice fly to center that brought sophomore left fielder Parker Shaffer (Richmond, Va.) in, and Fielder followed with a two-out single to plate graduate student right fielder Kinston Carson (Tappahannock, Va.).
-
The Pacers had a chance to counterpunch in the following inning, loading the bases with nobody out, but senior right-hander Ryan Irby (Midlothian, Va.) got out of the jam with a strikeout and a ground-ball double play. Irby pitched two shutout innings to kick off the bullpen day, earning his first win of the year.
-
Fiedler brought another run in with an RBI double in the third, and Lynchburg added another insurance run in the sixth thanks to an RBI triple off the bat of senior third baseman Griffin Wild (Severna Park, Md.).
-
Lynchburg broke the game open with a five-run eighth inning, highlighted by Combs' two-run double down the left-field line.
