Baseball sweeps Guilford in ODAC doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's baseball team added to its Old Dominion Athletic Conference win column twice Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of Guilford, 3-1 and 4-1, on the Hornets' Fox Field.

Lynchburg's six pitchers combined for 19 strikeouts on the day, while the Hornet offense provided just enough run support. Freshman third baseman Garrett Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.) had three hits -- a solo homer and two doubles -- and scored three runs to lead the way at the plate.

The Hornet defense got the job done as well, playing a pair of error-free ballgames.

Lynchburg also did plenty of good off the field, raising more than $3,000 for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation's Vs. Cancer initiative. Fans who couldn't give at the ballgames can contribute online via this hyperlink.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1

  • Graduate student left-hander Kinston Carson (Tappahannock, Va.) shut the Quakers down early with five shutout innings.

  • Lynchburg's offense got its pitcher a lead in the fourth as Jackson slugged a one-out double and came around on an RBI single from freshman catcher Holden Fiedler (Henrico, Va.).

  • Fiedler delivered another RBI single in the sixth, but Guilford got to Jackson, who was on in relief, for an eighth-inning run that cut the deficit to 2-1.

  • The Hornets added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning thanks to sophomore first baseman Avery Combs' (Lynchburg, Va.) RBI knock, again scoring Jackson, and sophomore right-hander Grayson Thurman (Lynch Station, Va.) slammed the door in the ninth for his first-career save.

Game 2

  • Jackson put the Hornets up early with a second-inning solo homer.

  • Junior right-hander Hunter Campbell (Lynchburg, Va.) kept the Quakers quiet with seven strong innings. Guilford got to Campbell for a run in the third, but the righty cruised to his third win of the season, allowing just three hits and striking out seven.

  • Carson broke the 1-1 tie in the bottom of the third with an RBI single, and the Hornets added their final two runs in the fifth. Combs slapped another RBI single, and freshman center fielder Carrson Atkins (Charlottesville, Va.) stole third and came home as the Quaker catcher's throw skidded into left field.

  • Freshman right-hander Baylor Cumbea (Midlothian, Va.) and sophomore righty Santiago Meneses (Guatemala City, GUATEMALA) closed the game out with a scoreless inning apiece. Meneses earned his fourth save of the season.
