Baseball upsets No. 9 Randolph-Macon

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's baseball team rallied in the late innings Wednesday afternoon to secure a 10-5 upset of Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival and ninth-ranked Randolph-Macon.

The Hornets were scoreless after four innings but scored in each of the final four, exploiting the Yellow Jackets' bullpen on their way to victory.

Freshman third baseman Garrett Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.) went 3-for-5 with two RBI at the plate and also picked up the win in relief for Lynchburg.

Freshman left fielder Kaden Warren (Berryville, Va.) and freshman catcher Holden Fiedler (Henrico, Va.) each scored two runs and drove in another.

Matthew Blaise had two hits for R-MC, including a game-tying RBI single in the seventh.

It was the Hornets' fifth-straight win.

THE RUNDOWN

Final: Lynchburg 10, No. 9 Randolph-Macon 5

Records: Lynchburg (13-13, 6-5 ODAC), Randolph-Macon (12-5, 9-2 ODAC)

Venue: James C. Fox Field, University of Lynchburg, Lynchburg, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Randolph-Macon took advantage of two Lynchburg errors in the third inning for an early 3-0 lead. Hornets graduate student left-hander Kinston Carson (Tappahannock, Va.) left the mound after three innings of one-hit ball. He didn't allow an earned run.

  • Lynchburg cut the lead to 3-2 in the fifth thanks to an RBI triple from freshman center fielder Carrson Atkins (Charlottesville, Va.) and a run-scoring groundout off the bat of freshman shortstop Brian Sheeder (Sutherland, Va.), but a Mike Nickles solo homer gave the visitors a 4-2 lead the following inning.

  • The Hornets took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth on Fiedler's RBI single, an RBI double from freshman first baseman Cameron Lane (Manassas, Va.), and a run-scoring passed ball.

  • R-MC promptly tied the game in the seventh on Blaise's single, but Lynchburg took the lead in the bottom half. Warren's RBI single put the Hornets back in front, 6-5, and the next batter, Jackson, uncorked a two-run triple to expand the lead.

  • Lynchburg brought the score to its final standing in the eighth thanks to a pinch-hit, RBI double from sophomore Avery Combs (Lynchburg, Va.) and a Randolph-Macon error.

  • Junior left-hander Nick Norman (Goochland, Va.) and sophomore right-hander Grayson Thurman (Lynch Station, Va.) tossed perfect eighth and ninth innings, respectively, to cinch the win.

LOOKING AHEAD

The road gets no easier for Lynchburg as the Hornets will travel to defending conference champion Shenandoah Saturday, April 6 for an ODAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
