Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg baseball extended its win streak to five games Wednesday afternoon as the Hornets scored double-digit runs for the third game in a row with its 15-5 drubbing of the Averett Cougars.
Kinston Carson led the Hornets' offense, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI on the afternoon. Carson's were three of seven runs driven in by the top of the Lynchburg order, as sophomore Carrson Atkins and junior Parker Shaffer both doubled and drove home two runs.
Lynchburg (8-3) trailed 1-0 early to the Cougars, but a five-run second inning saw the Hornets take a 5-1 lead and they never looked back. The Hornets scored another five runs in the third, three more in the fifth and their last two in the eighth on back-to-back hits from Shaffer and Atkins to go ahead, 15-5.
On the day, there were 12 hit-by-pitches combined between Averett and Lynchburg pitching. The total was two shy of tying the NCAA baseball record for the most in any game across Divisions I, II, or III. Hornet pitching contributed six of the 12 HBPs, however the staff did not surrender a base on ball in the contest.
Lynchburg baseball will be back in action on Saturday, March 7 as it looks to extend its win streak with a doubleheader against the Generals of Washington and Lee to open Old Dominion Athletic Conference play. First pitch of Game 1 is set for noon.
