Box Score Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg sophomore Avery Neaves has a knack for coming through in clutch situations, and the Hornets left fielder delivered yet again on Tuesday afternoon in the Hornets' 3-1 win over the 12th-ranked Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets.
In the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded, Neaves stepped up to the plate and lined a 3-1 fastball over the head of the R-MC right fielder to promptly clear the bases and bring all three Hornets around to score and give Lynchbug a 3-1 advantage.
The Hornets (20-8, 11-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) entered the bottom of the seventh down 1-0 as they faced the third Yellow Jackets pitcher on the day. With one out, freshman Ryan Long singled back up the middle and then Parker Shaffer reached on a bunt single after he pinch hit for Jackson Harding. Two batters later Kinston Carson drew a two-out walk to load the bases and set up Neaves' bases clearing knock.
In the top of the ninth, the Yellow Jackets (15-5, 12-2) almost made things interesting as Lynchburg reliever Grayson Thurman allowed two runners to reach base. With one out in the inning, Thurman induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the game and seal the Hornets' 10th straight win and 11th straight on Fox Field.
Lynchburg starter Zack Potts went 5 1⁄3 innings and allowed a lone run on five hits and struck out two. Thurman earned his third win of the year and R-MC's Zack Radcliffe took the loss for the Yellow Jackets.
Lynchburg baseball will be back on the diamond Wednesday, April 14 as the Hornets travel to William Peace University with a non-conference bout against the Pacers. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
