Late game heroics lead baseball past Tigers

Box Score

Hampden-Sydney, Va. -- Jackson Harding blasted a pinch-hit, go-ahead home run to lead off the top of the ninth inning, putting University of Lynchburg's baseball team ahead of Hampden-Sydney for good in the Hornets' 6-4 win on the road Tuesday afternoon.

Harding and sophomore Avery Neaves both clubbed solo homers for Lynchburg in the ninth. With the game tied at 4, Harding sent a ball over the right-field fence to put the Hornets up 5-4. Two batters later, Neaves sent one out to left center to give the Hornets a two-run advantage.

Lynchburg played from behind once again this season as the Hornets (26-11, 16-4 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) fell behind 1-0 in the bottom of the first as the Tigers scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly to center field.

In the top of the second, Lynchburg scored four times in the inning as five Hornets reached base in a row. After Gavin Collins singled and PJ Alvanos drew a walk, Holden Fiedler singled home Collins; freshman Ryan Long plated Alvanos; and junior Cameron Lane doubled home Fiedler and Long, giving Lynchburg a 4-1 edge.

The Tigers (16-11, 11-9) scored two in the fifth and then tied the game, 4-4 in the bottom of the eighth, on a sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Max Lipscomb. The next inning, Harding and Neaves homerd to put the Hornets in front and seal Lynchburg's 26th victory of the year.

Lynchburg starter Zack Potts went 6 ⅔ and allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits, walked one and struck out four, but earned a no-decision. Jack Bachmore threw a perfect 1 ⅔ innings as the sophomore struck out two and earned his fourth win of the year.

Lynchburg baseball will be back on the diamond on Sunday, May 2 for Senior Day as the Hornets host Bridgewater College for the final regular season ODAC doubleheader. First pitch is set for noon.
