Baseball sweeps Bridgewater to close out regular season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg baseball celebrated Senior Day with a sweep of Bridgewater College in its final regular season Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon, with final scores of 17-1 in Game 1 and 12-1 in Game 2.

In Game 1, the Hornets (28-11, 18-4 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) jumped out in front to a 4-0 advantage with a four-run first inning. After the first three Hornets reached base, sophomore Avery Neaves hit a two-run double to right center to score Parker Shaffer and Garrett Jackson. One batter later, Avery Combs brought in Kinston Carson with an RBI groundout and then Gavin Collins drove in Neaves with a sacrifice fly to center.

The next inning, Lynchburg tacked on four more on four hits as Ryan Long plated Holden Fiedler with an RBI single to left center. Three batters later, after Long advanced to third and Jackson drew a walk and stole second, Carson hit a sacrifice fly to right to plate Long. Senior Avery Combs capped the Hornets' second four-run inning with a two-run double to right, putting Lynchburg up 8-0.

In the top of the fourth, the Eagles (11-13, 10-12) scored a lone run on an RBI-single off the bat of Jarret Biesecker, but that was all the Bridgewater offense could muster on the afternoon.

The Hornets scored a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the seventh before scoring five in the eighth without the aid of a hit. Seven Hornets reached base on either a walk or hit-by-pitch, giving Lynchburg a 17-1 edge and sealing the Game 1 win.

Carson, Lynchburg's starter, went seven innings, allowed only one run on seven hits and struck out six to earn his third win of the year. Senior Michael Reiskind threw a perfect ninth inning to close out the game.

In Game 2, Cameron Lane put the Hornets out in front in the third inning as the junior sent one off the scoreboard in right center for a two-run home run, putting Lynchburg up 2-0.

In the fourth, the Hornets tacked on four more as PJ Alvanos doubled home Collins then two batters later, Long singled up the middle to plate Alvanos. Later in the inning, Jackson connected on one to center for a sacrifice fly and Carson singled home Lane who reached on a single of his own.

Lynchburg scored six more times in the contest as the Hornets put up another four-spot in the sixth on four hits, highlighted by a two-run triple from Neaves. Then in the bottom of the eighth, after Bridgewater scored its only run in the top half, junior Chris Martin singled home a pair to put Lynchburg ahead 12-1.

Game 2 starter Brandon Pond went seven shutout innings as the junior allowed just seven hits, one walk and struck out four to earn his sixth win. Seniors Santiago Meneses and Phil D'Ambrosio combined for a perfect ninth as Meneses recorded the first two outs and D'Ambrosio recorded the final out with a backwards K.

With the doubleheader sweep, Lynchburg baseball finished the regular season tied for the No. 1 spot in the conference standings.

The Hornets will be back on the diamond on Saturday, May 8 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference quarterfinal round at a time to be determined.
