Box Score High Point, N.C. -- University of Lynchburg's baseball team fell, 6-1, to No. 6-ranked Salisbury Saturday evening at Truist Point on the third day of the NCAA Division III High Point Regional in a game that was delayed twice due to inclement weather.
Lynchburg fell behind 2-0 in the first inning -- the third straight game it faced a first inning deficit -- but this time the Hornets were unable to come from behind as Salisbury led for the entire contest.
In the third, the Sea Gulls scored twice more to take a 4-0 lead, and Salisbury's starter Jackson Balzan continued to stymie the Lynchburg lineup. The lefty did not allow a hit until a Carrson Atkins double in the bottom half of the fifth.
In the sixth, Garrett Jackson led off with a single to right. Then, after a double from Avery Neaves, Jackson scored on a sacrifice fly from PJ Alvanos to cut the deficit to 4-1.
In the seventh, Salisbury put up its third two-run inning of the contest and took a 6-1 lead, as Lynchburg did not record a hit over the the final three frames and fell by that same score.
The Lynchburg bullpen was a bright spot for the Hornets on the evening, as three Lynchburg pitchers combined to hold the Sea Gulls to just four hits over the final 6 2⁄3 innings. Adam Dofflemyer tossed 4 1⁄3 and allowed two runs on two hits and punched out three. Brendan Houghtaling went one inning, allowed one hit, and struck out one. Senior Michael Reiskind threw the final 1 1⁄3, allowed a lone hit and struck out one.
Lynchburg will be back on the diamond on Sunday, May 30 as the Hornets take on the Birmingham-Southern Panthers in an elimination game. First pitch is set for 11:30 a.m. The winner will play Salisbury directly after.
