Women's soccer upsets no. 24 Emory

Box Score

Huntersville, N.C -- Road warriors. University of Lynchburg women's soccer won their fifth-consecutive road game Sunday afternoon, beating no. 24 Emory 2-1.

Both teams played an evenly-matched first half. Lynchburg took six shots in the first half compared to Emory's five. Jade Lecklider faced two shots on net in the first half, saving both in the 39th and 40th minute, respectively.

With ten seconds remaining in the opening half, Victoria Newman picked up the ball for a throw-in near Lynchburg's bench. She found herself with the ball quickly after playing the ball inbounds and set up Alyssa Damato for a goal three seconds before halftime. Damato earned her third goal of the season and 12th of her career.

"That was just insane," junior forward Averey Wyscarver said after the game. "I think [Damato's goal] made us pick it up even more because going into the second half we all wanted to put the game away."

Wyscarver seemed to do exactly that three minutes into the second half. Amanda Wigboldy saw Wyscarver making a run and the senior from Lynchburg, Va. played a long pass up to Wyscarver. The 5-6 junior ran onto the pass and buried Lynchburg's second goal.

Emory applied heavy pressure in the final half and outpossed Lynchburg the rest of the way. The Eagles took eight shots after Wyscarver's tally and scored off a long set play at the 73:41 mark.

However, Lecklider continued her great play in goal and made six saves overall, including two clutch denials with less than four minutes left in the contest.

Wyscarver's goal proved to be the difference in the match and Lynchburg won 2-1. Lynchburg earned the program's first win over a ranked opponent since defeating no. 2 Messiah in penalties on Nov. 16, 2018 in the third round of the NCAA Division III tournament.

The Hornets have won five-straight matches, all on the road. "That's what Lynchburg soccer is," Wyscarver said. "It's insane...I'm really happy to be a part of this team and we're excited for some home games."

Lynchburg (5-1, 1-0 ODAC) will finally play their first home match on Tuesday, Sept. 28 against Sweet Briar at 4:30 p.m.
