Box Score High Point, N.C. -- University of Lynchburg baseball could not hold on to a two-run lead against Greensboro Tuesday evening.
Garrett Jackson put No. 6 Lynchburg on the board in the first with a single after Cameron Lane doubled. In the bottom of the frame, Wesley Arrington made his first start of the season and retired the side without a run.
The Hornets nearly hit for the cycle in the second inning. Carrson Atkins hit his second triple of the season and scored Holden Fiedler. Lane doubled Atkins home in the next AB.
Jackson extended the lead to 4-1 in the top of the fifth with his second homer of the year. Adam Dofflemyer relieved Arrington in the bottom of the frame. Arrington's day ended after four innings of one-run baseball with four strikeouts.
After Greensboro took a lead with a four-run sixth inning, the Hornets quickly responded. Lane, Logan Webster, and Jackson were all hit by pitches to start the seventh. The Hornets have been hit by 36 pitches this season. With the bases loaded, Lynchburg scored three runs in three plate appearances. Averey Neaves, PJ Alvanos, and Gavin Collins collected RBI in the inning. Ryan Long's single with two outs was the only hit of the inning, but he was left stranded on first to end the rally.
Grayson Thurman inherited a bases-loaded no-out jam in the seventh, but could not accomplish the Houdini act. Lynchburg went quietly in the remaining two innings and lost 8-7.
The No. 6-ranked Hornets (12-3, 2-0) visit Pfieffer at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Mar. 16.
