Box Score 2 Greensboro, N.C. -- The fifth-ranked University of Lynchburg baseball team clubbed five home runs Saturday on its way to an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep of Guilford. The Hornets won the opener, 21-10, and took the finisher by an 11-3 tally.
Garrett Jackson and Avery Neaves collected six hits and two homers apiece for the Hornets, and leadoff man Cameron Lane set the table effectively, reaching base on nine of his 12 plate appearances.
Lynchburg wasted no time getting out front in Game 1. The Hornets scored five runs in the top of the first inning, highlighted by Jackson's two-run home run, but the Quakers came right back with five of their own in the bottom half of the inning.
The Hornets took the lead for good in the second, scoring on a PJ Alvanos sacrifice fly and Gavin Collins' two-run single, the first of Collins' four hits on the afternoon.
GC cut the lead to 8-7, but Lynchburg rebounded with five runs in the third, one in the fourth and eighth, and six more in the ninth to roll to a series-opening win.
Lynchburg's pitching left less doubt in Game 2. Neaves opened the scoring with a two-run double in the first, and Riley O'Donovan homered in the second to keep Lynchburg out in front. Neaves added two more home runs later in the game, and Jackson hit his second of the day in the fourth.
Nick Mattfield earned the win in Game 2 with six innings of three-run ball, striking out six.
Lynchburg (26-6, 12-2 ODAC) will take a break from conference play Tuesday with a 3 p.m. non-conference game against William Peace at home.
