Box Score High Point, N.C. -- University of Lynchburg baseball dropped the first game of championship weekend in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament Friday afternoon. The top-seeded and seventh-ranked Hornets lost 15-3 against Roanoke.
Avery Neaves kicked off the game with his 15th home run of the season. With Garrett Jackson on first after being hit by a pitch, Neaves crushed one over the center field wall 400 feet away and gave Lynchburg a 2-0 lead.
However, Roanoke's starter Caleb Lingenfelter settled in and retired the next 14 Hornets he faced.
Nick Mattfield got the start and shut out the Maroons over the first three innings. He fanned four over that span and worked out of several jams.
Roanoke tied the game up in the fourth on an error, and scored 10 runs in the next three frames handing Mattfield his first-career loss.
The Hornets could only put together six hits after the first inning. Trailing 15-2 in the bottom of the ninth, Neaves came around to score again on a Gavin Collins single. Lingenfelter sat down the next three Hornets in a row and earned the complete-game victory.
Lynchburg (34-9) takes on the loser of Bridgewater and Shenandoah on Saturday, May 14 at 10 a.m.
