Chris Yeager wins 250th match

Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg men's soccer head coach Chris Yeager earned his 250th win Saturday afternoon as his Hornets defeated Randolph-Macon 2-0.

Yeager took over as the program's fifth head coach in 2002. In over two decades, Yeager and the Hornets have won eight Old Dominion Athletic Conference championships, made eight NCAA championship appearances, and were the national runner-up in 2010.

Yeager is 35th among active Division-III men's soccer coaches in wins. Six Hornets have garnered All-America honors under Yeager's tutelage, and 43 players landed all-region nods for the six-time ODAC coach of the year. After the historic 2010 season, Yeager was honored in January as the Division III national men's coach of the year, the first time an Lynchburg athletics coach had earned those accolades. His Hornets finished 20-5-1 and won their second-straight ODAC title that season as Lynchburg eliminated the #1, #2, #6 and #12th-ranked teams in the nation during the storybook NCAA tournament run.

Yeager joins Bill Shellenberger in the program's 250 win club. Shellenberger, the legendary Lynchburg coach for whom the field Yeager coaches on is named, won 341 matches in his historic tenure. Shellenberger started the men's soccer program at Lynchburg in 1954, won numerous national awards, was inducted into eight halls of fame, and in 1991, the Virginia General Assembly recognized him for his "Unparalleled Record of Achievement." Sports Illustrated dubbed him "the winningest coach ever in college soccer" in a 1978 feature, which he was for many years.

Yeager and his 2023 squad are riding an eight-match winning streak in their best start to a season since 2018. Yeager looks for win No. 251 on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. when the Hornets host Shenandoah on Shellenberger Field.
