No. 11 field hockey headed to 34th ODAC championship

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg field hockey team defeated Bridgewater 4-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference semifinals Thursday night.

The 11th-ranked Hornets booked their ticket to their 34th conference championship and will be looking for their 22nd title. This will be the 40th ODAC championship played in the history of the conference.

Olivia van Metre got Lynchburg on the board first 6:26 into play. Marlou Wendriks assisted on the play, feeding van Metre from the far side to right in front of the cage. van Metre finished her one-on-one with the goalie with ease for her ninth goal of the season.

Bridgewater did not get off a shot until the second quarter, and Kayla Brady made the save on all three shots that came her way. She made two more in the second half to complete Lynchburg's 11th shutout of the season.

Anna Dorrestijn caged Lynchburg's second goal of the game midway through the second. Two minutes later, Kessa Shaffer scored on an assist from Renee Van Thiel. Shaffer's shot was initially stopped by Madalyn Miller but had enough speed behind it that it continued to the back of the cage.

Boatwright and Shaffer both added to their scoring totals in the second half, but two other players made their bid for an assist on Boatwright's goal. Off of a penalty corner, Ryleigh Cameron stopped it at the arc and fired back to the cage. Wendriks got a stick on Cameron's pass and so did Shaffer before Boatwright, sprinting in from inserting the corner, knocked it home for Lynchburg's fourth goal of the night. It marked Lynchburg's ninth game with four or more goals on the season.

The Hornets (18-2, 9-0 ODAC) will host No. 16 Shenandoah on Saturday, Nov. 4.
