Lookout Mountain, Ga. -- The University of Lynchburg women's volleyball team stole a set from 25th-ranked Covenant on the road Saturday afternoon but lost both its matches to the Scots and the Stormy Petrels of Oglethorpe.
After dropping the first set by 10 points, Lynchburg regrouped and only trailed by two early in the second against Covenant. A kill from Kailey Keough started a rally for Lynchburg, and with Jaina Leek serving, the Hornets took control of the lead with five straight points. Myranda Cummings had a block during the run and finished the match with five kills. She tied with Bree Spainhour for second on the team behind Ava Meinhardt's eight.
Spainhour had two kills in the third set, and Meinhardt had two in the fourth, but Covenant bounced back to take the final two sets and win 3-1.
In their regular-season finale, the Hornets took on Oglethorpe and fell in straight sets. Keough had a quiet match against Covenant but led the team with 11 kills in the loss to the Stormy Petrels.
The second set featured 64 points and another five-point run from the Hornets to take a 22-21 lead. The Stormy Petrels earned the first possible-set point of the second set, and Lynchburg earned one of its own later at 29-28, but Oglethorpe got the job done 33-31.
Spainhour had five kills in the third set, but Oglethrope withstood the sophomore's offensive attack and won 25-22.
Cassi Blackmore had 26 digs between the two losses, and Mya Green and Leek combined for 47 assists.
Lynchburg (11-13, 6-6 ODAC) earned the seventh seed in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament and will play at Randolph-Macon on Tuesday, Nov. 7.
