Lexington, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball team lost 96-69 against Washington and Lee Saturday afternoon.
The first quarter started out rocky for the Hornets as the Generals had a 14-0 run in the first five minutes. Kacey Kelly scored the first bucket for Lynchburg, and seven players scored for the Hornets in the first, but they ended the quarter down nine points.
Though the Hornets found some momentum in the second quarter with eight points from Bree Spainhour and two assists from Sayre Brandstatter, they could not slow down the Generals who led 55-34 at the end of the half.
Lynchburg came back from halftime fired up. Macey Mullins had a steal that led to a 3-pointer from Spainhour. The Hornets went 5-6 from the free-throw line and had eight rebounds. A fastbreak and a jumper from Sammi Server ended the quarter 74-53. Both teams put up 19 points in the quarter.
Washington and Lee started the fourth quarter with a 11-0 run until Darcy Ross subbed in and had a layup that got the Hornets back in the game. Ross kept the team alive with two rebounds, a steal, a block and four points but it was not enough as the Hornets fell to the 21st-ranked Generals.
Spainhour led the Hornets with 16 points and four rebounds. Ross, Brandstatter and Sever each had four rebounds as well. Brandstatter dished out six assists which matched her season average.
The Hornets (3-4, 0-3 ODAC) take on Ferrum (5-2, 3-1 ODAC) on the road on Wednesday, Dec. 6.
