No. 16 baseball sweeps home-opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg baseball senior Zack Potts struck out nine and earned the win in the 16th-ranked Hornets 4-2 win over Eastern University Sunday afternoon. Lynchburg also beat Eastern 14-0 in Game 2 of the double-header.

Sophomore Logan Webster started the scoring for the Hornets in their home-opener with an RBI single in the 1st inning driving home graduate student Jackson Harding. The Keysville, Va. native scored two of Lynchburg's four runs in Game 1.

Junior Gavin Collins touched home on a single up the middle from graduate student Holden Fiedler in the 2nd.

Starting first baseman Josh Gjormand led the Hornets with two RBI in the first game. He gave Lynchburg a 4-2 lead in the 8th with an RBI triple scoring Webster.

The Lynchburg bullpen supported Potts with three scoreless innings by freshman Logan Tappman and senior Jack Bachmore. The veteran notched his first save of the season.

In Game 2, the Hornets showcased their ability on both sides of the ball shutting out the Eagles 14-0.

2022 ODAC Rookie of the Year Nick Mattfield recorded the start and the win only allowing three hits through five innings. He sat down eight Eagles in the process.

A majority of Lynchburg's offense came in the 2nd inning where the Hornets scored six runs ignited by freshman Mason McDowell's first-collegiate hit, which was an RBI double scoring Collins. McDowell led the team with three RBI and went 3-4 in his first-career start.

Seven different Hornets recorded an RBI, two coming from graduate student Cameron Lane, Riley O'Donovan, Gavin Collins, and Mason McDowell. Lynchburg totaled five doubles on fourteen hits.

Webster and Avery Neaves each swiped a base, this was Neaves' second on the day.

The Lynchburg bullpen faced the minimum in two scoreless innings from Matt Cassidy and Alex Gianascoli. Two innings proved to be enough as the run-rule took effect after the 7th with Lynchburg leading 14-0.

Neaves ODAC career walk record counter: 105 (116 is the record)
