No. 13 baseball wins thriller in Cary

Box Score

Cary, NC -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team continued its hot start to the 2023 season in a close one on the road against William Peace Tuesday.

The 13th-ranked Hornets bested the Pacers 11-10.

Senior pitcher Wesley Arrington allowed four hits and one earned run through 2.1 innings in his first start of the season.

The Hornet defense committed three errors in the first two innings allowing three unearned runs to come across for the Pacers.

Despite only two hits in the 2nd inning, Lynchburg scored seven runs drawing two walks and three hit-by-pitches.

Junior catcher Riley O'Donovan capped off the scoring in the 2nd and hit his sixth-career round-tripper driving home sophomore Logan Webster to make the score 7-1. This was O'Donovans first home run of the season. The Reston, Va. native's last long ball lifted the Hornets past Salve Regina in the first round of the NCAA tournament last season.

Six Hornets came on in relief allowing six earned runs through 7.2 innings of work. Freshman Austin Riney made his collegiate debut and was relieved by freshman Matt Cassidy in the 4th inning. The two young arms combined for one earned run through 2.2 innings.

O'Donovan and Webster both drew bases-loaded walks in the 5th to give the Hornets a 10-9 lead.

With the score tied in the 9th, graduate student Cameron Lane drew a pinch-hit walk and was driven home by an infield base hit from preseason All-American Avery Neaves

Senior Jack Bachmore closed out the game earning his second win on the season striking out five through 3.1 innings. Bachmore now has two wins and one save in three appearances in 2023.

The Hornets (5-1) host York (Pa.) for a three-game series beginning Saturday, March 4 at 11 a.m.

Neaves ODAC career walk record counter: 105 (116 is the record)
