Box Score 2 Winchester, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg baseball team won Game 1 against Shenandoah but fell in Game 2 splitting a high-profile double-header with Shenandoah Sunday.
Avery Neaves scored the go-ahead run in the 10th inning during the 3-2 win in Game 1. Jack Bachmore earned the win with 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. The Hornets nearly mounted a comeback in Game 2 but fell 6-4.
Neaves brought home Brandon Garcia in the 1st inning of Game 1, but Shenandoah tagged Zack Potts for two runs in the bottom half.
That is all the home offense could muster against Lynchburg's pitching staff. Potts settled in and retired 14 of his next 18 batters before Bachmore came in to pitch Lynchburg to victory.
Neaves singled in the 5th, and Garcia scored on the play to tie the game 2-2. Bachmore took the mound in the 7th with two outs which has been a gloomy sight for opposing batters all year. He struck out Shenandoah's Tyler Blittersdorf to retire the side in the inning and went on to pitch 3.1 innings of shutout ball the rest of the way. He induced a double play in the 9th forcing the game into extras.
Neaves led off with a single in Lynchburg's first extra-inning at-bat of the season. The program-leader in RBIs, homers, and walks advanced to second on a walk from Jackson Harding.
Facing a lefty, Benton Jones stepped to plate with two outs. He reached on a infield single to first, and Neaves showcased his speed rounding third and scoring on the play.
Bachmore worked around a walk and stolen base in the bottom of the 10th and retired the side for his fifth win of the season.
Lynchburg never led in Game 2. Garcia started the scoring in the 3rd on a double-steal with Jones, but Shenandoah had already put two runs up earlier in the 1st.
Shenandoah added crucial insurance runs in the 4th and 8th innings.
Eric Hiett doubled home Jones in the 8th, and Jones hit a two-run shot in the 9th, but Lynchburg was unable to force extras for a second game in a row and fell 6-4.
Lynchburg (29-5, 16-3 ODAC) suffered its first loss since April 5 but still hold a lead in the conference standings. The Hornets take on Hampden-Sydney on Tuesday, April 25 at 3:30 p.m.
