Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg women's soccer freshman Sejal Wellington scored her first-collegiate goal as the Hornets triumphed past Southern Virginia in a 2-0 victory Wednesday.
A solid effort from the back line earned Lynchburg its third shutout of the 2023 campaign, snapping a three-game losing streak.
In the sixth minute, junior forward Meghan Lauder connected on a header in the Hornets' first corner of the match. Victoria Newman earned her first assist of the season as her cross found her teammate. Lauder's header is the quickest the Hornets have scored in a match this season.
Going to the bench early, head coach Dr. Todd Olsen saw his squad double its lead behind the foot of freshman forward Sejal Wellington.
The Knights conceded a costly turnover in the defensive third, and the Hornets found Wellington up front. All alone with the keeper, she tucked the ball away in the bottom corner to add insurance on the scoreboard.
Lynchburg and SVU fired 10 shots total in the second half, though none found the net in the 2-0 result. Despite SVU outshooting Lynchburg 12-9, the Knights were unable to score on the Lynchburg defense.
Senior goalkeeper Jade Lecklider made five saves to keep SVU quiet throughout the match.
The Hornets improved to 7-0 all-time against the Knights.
The Hornets (3-3) will be in action on the road Saturday, Sept. 23 opening conference play against Eastern Mennonite at 4p.m.
