Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg women's soccer stamped its fourth consecutive win with a 2-1 victory over Bridgewater on Saturday.
Of Lynchburg's 13 shots, 10 were fired on goal forcing Eagles keeper Carlee Gaboury to make eight saves throughout the game. Each of the contest's three goals was assisted.
Though the Eagles outshot Lynchburg eight to five in the opening half, they were unable to capitalize on the scoreboard.
After trading early opportunities in the first half, Lynchburg's offense broke through in the 31st minute. Elora Grochowski found Victoria Newman at the top of the 18-yard box, and the senior midfielder connected to give Lynchburg the lead.
Lynchburg carried energy out of the break, but Eagles forward Lyric Birkley swung the momentum with a header from a Bridgewater corner. The two sides combined for nine corners in the second half.
Wasting no time, the Hornets trickled into the attacking third, earning their own corner off a Bridgewater deflection. No more than 70 seconds removed from the equalizer, junior defender Claire Lloyd punched her shot left of the keeper to regain the lead.
The game-winning goal is Lloyd's first of the season and fourth of her collegiate career.
Bridgewater attempted to storm back, but to no avail. The Eagles' best opportunity came in the 78th minute when Micah Stine's shot vibrated off the crossbar.
Bleeding out the final minutes of possession, Lynchburg safely maneuvered to the finish line. The Hornets won their fourth straight contest despite conceding at least one goal in each match.
Next up, Lynchburg will travel to Averett on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. for the first of a two-game road trip.
