Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 17 field hockey prevails in overtime

Winchester, Va. -- University of Lynchburg Field Hockey freshman forward Anna Dorrestijn scored her second career game-winning goal in overtime to give Lynchburg a 2-1 victory over No. 19 Shenandoah on Saturday afternoon, giving Lynchburg its seventh-straight win.

Dorrestijn recorded her first collegiate goal a week ago to the day against nationally-ranked York, to give Lynchburg an advantage it would not surrender in a 2-0 victory.

The first-year from the Netherlands took an assist from leading scorer Marlou Wendriks in the fourth minute of the extra frame to give 17th-ranked Lynchburg its second ranked victory of the year.

Each of Lynchburg's pair of marquee wins have come away from Shellenberger Field and Saturday's game pitted two of the top three teams in the ODAC preseason poll against one another.

Lynchburg entered the year ranked first in the preseason coaches' poll with Shenandoah falling just two points behind in third.

The two teams met in last year's ODAC Tournament semifinals, with Lynchburg securing the victory.

The pair of Hornet squads played to a nil-nil tie after 30 minutes, though Lynchburg held advantages of 7-3 in shots and 4-1 in penalty corners, as they continued to play to their possession-style offense.

Lynchburg goalkeeper Kayla Brady made each of her first half saves in the opening quarter.

Lynchburg awarded itself a good chance to score just before the break when Aaryn Boatwright sent a penalty corner in to Kessa Shaffer, whose shot was blocked with just 16 seconds left on the clock.

The second half began with four-straight Lynchburg fouls which ultimately set up the first goal of the day: a Shenandoah score in the game's 32nd minute.

Lynchburg found itself trailing for only the second time this season and the first since an early September loss to Ursinus.

The deficit did not last long as defender Ryleigh Cameron took a feed from Boatwright off of the sixth Lynchburg penalty corner and turned it into her second goal of the season, tying the game at one apiece just four minutes after the Shenandoah tally.

The two teams combined to take nine shots in the third quarter before the offense ceased in the fourth.

Neither team recorded a shot attempt until the 59th minute when Shenandoah got off a pair of strikes following a penalty corner opportunity.

The 1-1 score through regulation sent Lynchburg to its first overtime period of the 2023 campaign.

The 10-minute sudden death style overtime was largely dominated by the Lynchburg offense from the start, as Lynchburg got off three shots and tested Shenandoah goalkeeper Taylor Swann twice in the first two minutes.

The home Hornets generated their lone scoring opportunity at the 63:22 mark off of a penalty corner but the shot was denied by Brady in cage.

The matchup featured two of the premier goalkeeper's in the ODAC, as Swann and Brady entered the day ranked first and second respectively in the conference in goal against average.

Brady made five saves on six shots faced to earn the win and Swann stopped nine of the 11 that came her way.

Less than two minutes after the Shenandoah shot attempt, Dorrestijn found the back of the cage off of a Wendriks assist to give Lynchburg the win in a battle of top-20 teams.

Dorrestijn has recorded five points over the past four games and with the helper, Wendriks extended her point-streak to seven consecutive contests.

The Lynchburg offense continued to generate pressure against its opposing defense, taking 16 shots to Shenandoah's 11 and winning the penalty corner battle 13-4.

Lynchburg has outshot its opponents in every game of its current win streak.

With the win, Lynchburg (9-1, 2-0 ODAC) picked up its second league win to leap to an early advantage in the conference standings and will face Ferrum on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 4 p.m. on Shellenberger Field.
