Harrisonburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's basketball team downed EMU 79-49 on the road Wednesday night.
Led by Sammi Sever with 17 points, the Hornets got above .500 where they have been on three separate occasions this year. It was Sever's highest-scoring output of the season, but she had scored 16 twice before.
Sayre Brandstatter, Olivia Harris, and Bree Spainhour all scored in double-figures as well. Sever and Macey Mullins both made three 3-points in the win. Mullins knocked down multiple 3s for the first time since making two against Bridgewater on Dec. 16.
The Royals led 10-9 midway through the first quarter. Brandstatter gave Lynchburg the lead with a 3-pointer on an assist from Ashley Vandergrift, and the Hornets never trailed again. Brandstatter had six assists of her own to go with a team-high six rebounds. Vandergrift and Harris also had six boards.
Seven Hornets scored during a big third quarter for Lynchburg where the Hornets outscored EMU 27-9.
The Royals battled Lynchburg closely in the final quarter, but a pair of free throws from Kayla Sledge gave Lynchburg a 30-point lead to seal the deal.
The Hornets (8-7, 3-5 ODAC) host Averett on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 2 p.m.
