Box Score Lynchburg, Va. - The Lynchburg Hornets dropped their first home game of the season in a non-conference nail bitter vs. Washington & Lee 3-2.
The Generals opened up with a strong first 45 minutes, taking a 1-0 advantage into the break after a goal at the 31-minute mark.
The Generals added two more goals to their lead within the first 15 minutes of the second half, Emily Burke and Megahn Zimmerman putting Washington & Lee out in front 3-0.
Nonetheless, the Hornets refused to go away. Less than three minutes later a goal off the head of senior forward, Meghan Lauder would cut into the deficit.
This goal snapped a Washington & Lee streak of five consecutive games without a goal allowed, and just their second of the season.
As the game went on, the red-hot offense' slowly began to cool, up until the final two minutes.
At the 88-minute mark, a goal from Lauren Orner injected a new spark of life into the Hornets' offense.
In the final two minutes of play, the Hornets kept their foot on the gas, Lynchburg continuously firing at the goal. The Hornets fired off four shots in the final two minutes, all that flirted with the back net. A shot that ricocheted off the top post with 20 seconds remaining, and ultimately cleared to the opposite side of the field, ended the Lynchburg rally.
The Hornets will stay at home for one more match on Shellenberger during their three-game home stand, facing off against Roanoke this Saturday, Oct. 5.
