Salisbury, Md. -- The University of Lynchburg field hockey team squared up against a tough Salisbury squad in the second round of the NCAA tournament and was defeated, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium.
The Hornets had a remarkable 2024 campaign that unfortunately came to a close with the loss. This season, Lynchburg strung together 16 wins, including a 7-1 record against ODAC opponents, and ranked within the top 15 across the nation all year. This impressive Hornets squad has a lot to be proud of from this year's journey and head coach
Jenni Releford's first at the helm, including 10 All-ODAC selections and a 15th-best ranking in scoring average across all of Division III.Â
The first goal of today's contest was scored by Alex Kupper with 1:39 to go in the first period. The Sea Gulls added another in the beginning 23 seconds of the second quarter. With just under two minutes remaining in the affair, Salisbury scored the final goal of the outing and closed out the contest.
So much young talent on this team alludes to a bright future for this Lynchburg program. The top three scorers on the team were all freshman:
Jill Pleiter (nine goals),
Grace Peterson (nine goals) and
Maddie Schuchter (seven goals). Senior
Madison Mark made her mark as well, scoring seven goals and adding two assists in her final season with the Hornets. With all but three players returning to next year's crew, there is much to look forward to in Releford's second season as the leader of the program.
