Fredericksburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's lacrosse team traveled to Mary Washington for the 2024 season opener, falling 17-6 to the Eagles on Saturday evening.
Mary Washington was off to a quick start, netting two goals within the opening three minutes. The Hornets quickly responded with a goal of their own mere seconds later with Neely Morris opening her scoring ledger for the season. After several minutes of closely contested plays, the Eagles pulled away, ending the quarter with an 8-2 advantage.Â
Sydney Dumas netted two goals in the first half as the Hornets continued their push to cut the Eagles' lead. Morris would feature on the scoresheet again in the third quarter and finished with two goals. Despite Lynchburg's efforts, Mary Washington extended their dominance on the scoreboard in the second and third quarters, starting the final period with an 11-point lead.Â
Both teams found the net just once in the final quarter. Dumas scored to complete her first hat trick of the season, but the Eagles would seal the game just five minutes later.
Meredith Bornholdt led the Lynchburg defense with four ground balls and a caused turnover. Carson Quigley started in net for Lynchburg and made seven saves. Corinne West closed out the final four minutes in the game and made one save. Morris collected a team-high five draw controls, and Reagan Bradley chipped in with four of her own.
The Hornets (0-1) return to action at home on Saturday, Feb. 4 against Methodist at 4 p.m.
