Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women's lacrosse scores 16 in home opener

Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg head women's lacrosse coach McKenzie Rafferty earned her first win at the helm of the program as the Hornets beat Methodist 16-5 on Saturday.

By the time lightning forced both teams to head for the locker room midway through the game, the Hornets were already up 9-1. The referees ushered both sides off the field with 1:13 remaining in the first half shortly after Sydney Dumas had scored her third goal. Dumas ended the game with four goals and has recorded seven goals in the first two games of the season.

Mya Hausauer scored the first two goals of the game for Lynchburg with both scores coming on the power play. Tori King, McKenna Steinau, Neely Morris, and Emma Timberg scored before the halftime break as well.

After a 40-minute lightning delay and halftime, Hausauer restarted the scoring for the Hornets with her first career hat trick. Morris and Dumas added to their tallies in third, and Jenna Norko scored two goals of her own in the third. Norko's second goal of the quarter was unassisted, but Reagan Bradley set up Norko for her first score. Bradley and Taylor Daugherty scored their first goals of the season in the fourth quarter to wrap up the dominating debut for the Hornets on Shellenberger Field.

Corinne West earned her first career win in goal after making two saves with one coming on a free-position shot. Methodist was 0-3 from the eight-meter while Lynchburg went 3-6 on such opportunities.

Meredith Bornholdt led Lynchburg with seven ground balls, and Dumas caused three turnovers. Morris and Bradley each came up with two turnovers, and Morris led the team with four draw controls.

Lynchburg (1-1) hosts Southern Virginia on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 5 p.m.
